I will be out tomorrow...

Not sure if its the 3 kids, or having a job where I rarely sit down, but my back feels like its been tied in a knot and stuffed in a suitcase.  Never been to a chiropractor before, but  hopefully they'll know how to get me straightened out.

In class today....

Science:
We went over yesterday's quizzes, journaled vocabulary for our next concept (Rocks and Minerals), and watched a Bill Nye video on Geological Time and Radiometric Dating.

To the students who wanted extra credit because they did poorly on the quiz, then go here:  http://www.quia.com/pop/543447.html?AP_rand=427683940  and score an 8 out of 8 on this vocabulary game.

You have until Monday.

Math I:
I'm very happy with this group.  I like the way they stay engaged in instruction, and how we can do something fun and then get right back on track.

Today, we did some work with tile squares.  We realized that you can only make a square with the numbers 4, 9, 16, 25, and 36...Why?  Because they are square numbers-- 2X2, 3X3, 4X4, 5X5, 6X6.  We also discovered some cool thing about the sums and products of even and odd numbers.

Math II:
We took the Investigation 2 quiz that comes with our new Math curriculum and absolutely knocked it out of the park.   28 kids took the the 10-point quiz, the class scored a 276/280.  Great job, kids..but I'm gonna have to spice  up the next one myself.  Don't worry, no ghost pepper, but at least some Tobasco sauce or something...that quiz was a cinch.

Before we took the quiz we did another challenging warm-up problem.  This was another spatial awareness question.

Parents...see if you can solve it?

You line up 3 cups like this:

OK, now your goal is to get them all turned right side up....but you must abide by these rules:
-You must make 3 DIFFERENT moves.
            - You must move 2 cups at one time.

Sticking with spatial sense, I gave them a real head-scratcher after the test with a 200-point card question.  For anyone that solves it by Friday, I will give you a 200-point card.

Now, I know it isn't homework, or a grade ,but remember what I said about me wanting to see who here is resilient?   At some point you're going to come across something difficult and you will need to perservere. Just having knowledge isn't enough, in fact, its getting easier and easier to obtain. Heck, I have a world of knowledge in my pocket (my smartphone).  Make sure you don't get a false sense of security, and find out how valuable work ethic is the hard way-- by getting out-worked by peers you thought you were smarter than.

Of course, we should put this 'hard-work' into perspective. Simply, answering easy questions isn't hard work...It's just time-consuming. Getting you to problem-solve at your most uncomfortable capacity, even if it just takes 10 minutes is worth a lot more than 50 time-consuming questions of stuff you already know.

So, who's gonna solve this one?  Who's at least gonna try? Who's getting in the batter's box and going down swinging, and who's not even picking up a bat?

We'll see......See ya' Friday.
