The Critical Thinker....
I'm changing the name of my 100-point questions in Math to 'Critical Thinkers'.
Cheesy, huh?
Anyway....Today, I gave both Math's a really good Critical Thinker. Only 3 people were able to solve it.
It was a pattern recognition question. Pattern recognition questions have the highest correlation between ability and intelligence. It's the reason why they are used on IQ tests.
Here is a quote from intelligencetest.com, on pattern recognition and its ties to intelligence:
"This is primarily because pattern recognition is the ability to see order in a chaotic environment; the primary condition for life. Patterns can be found in ideas, words, symbols and images and pattern recognition is a key determinant of your potential in logical, verbal, numerical and spatial abilities. It is essential for reasoning because your capacity to think logically is based on your perception of the logic around you. Your pattern recognition skills are expressed verbally through your long term exposure to language and your mathematical and spatial abilities are based on your perception of numerical data and 3D objects"
Here is your average IQ-type of question:
Example 1:
Please enter the missing figure: 4, 5, 8, 17, 44,
A. 80
B. 125
C. 112
D. 60
E. 84
Example 2:
Find the picture that follows logically from the diagrams to the right.

Example 3: W
hich of the diagrams follows?

Think you can solve these?
Maybe?? To be honest, the multiple choice answers help you tremendously.
Today, I left my question open-ended. No multiple choice. No identifiable point of entry.
I will put the answer below, incase any parents want to try their hand at it.

Talk about making order out of chaos.....
Anyhow, my mind was a bit blown by the 3 kids who solved it. Way to go, Grace, Andrew P, and Connor.
In Class Today......
Science:
We played a review game called 'Triples'. Students were given 3 bits of information and had to tell me the science concept or vocabulary word that fit.
Writing:
Students turned in their rough drafts and then we peer edited them. The final copies are due on Wednesday 11/7/12.
Math I:
Bits and Pieces 1.2: Folding Fraction strips. Students were given different colored strips of paper and had to work as a group to fold them into equal sections.
Math II:
Bits and Pieces 2.3: Comparing Fractions to Benchmarks. Students were given a slew of fractions and had to group them by benchmarks without the help of rulers or calculators.
Students turned in ACE work before the end of BCO.
100-point Clue....
The very first of these were made out of sandstone and pumice. Later, people used the crust of bread. Then a sort of "vegetable gum" was used. Today, typical ones are made of rubber, but there are many types such as:
Art gum, kneaded, poster putty, electric, and soft vinyl.
Look under the BIG ONE of these in the room for the point cards.....
