Student Visit.....
4 of my girls from last year's class came to visit me this morning.  It was great seeing and hearing all the cool things they are doing now.  For instance;

  • Autumn is breaking opponents bones on the soccer field and harvesting the spirits that are released.
  • Grace is playing basketball for the New York Knicks.
  •  Leah is teaching literature at Yale (on the weekends of course).
  • Courtney has just completed building the Death Ray she had been working on.

It was great to see you all...and...umm...keep an eye on Courtney, she could really hurt herself with that thing.

Weekly Critical Times...
Normally, the Weekly Critical Times is an individual assignment.  However, this week's WCT lends itself rather nicely in helping Math II with a little weakness I picked up on this week.

 I have a number of Math II students who can master Math content but can't articulate their answers.  It almost seems unfair-- they KNOW it, but they can't PROVE that they know it.

Today's WCT proved to be a good teaching moment for them.  So, I broke out the manipulatives and we set off on solving a critical thinking question.

The WCT questioned boiled down to this....You have a group of 12 coins, you know that one of the coins is countefeit and the only way to tell is because the fake coin weighs less than the genuine ones. Given a balance and only 3 weighings could you identify the fake coin?

Each group was given 11 blocks of a single color, and 1 block of a different color (this block signified the fake coin).  Working collaboratively they had to solve it, and they did.  The tough part, communicating their answer in a way that's coherent. Each student now has to WRITE the answer out.  They have to explaining not by showing, but by WRITING.

Here are some pictures of how it's solved...of course, that's all I'm showing because the assignment isn't due until next week.

Last Week's WCT...
I posted Math I students who solved the last week's WCT question.  Here are Math II's students who solved it:

Aidan, Anthony, Connor, Dani K, Ava, Owen, Devon, Cole, AJT, The Mucus, Grant, Keegan, Troy, Ethan, Arica, and Caitlyn.

Science Notes.....
They are posted under the 'science notes' tab located at the top of the page.
