My Weekend
Last year, I put up pictures from my weekend on our website every Monday. Since, I am always talking about my kids, the students were always asking to see pictures. Anyhow....I figure I'll do that again this year.
My wife, kid's and I have a place at Indian Lake, as do my wife's parents. This weekend all of us went up for the holiday weekend, and met up with our cousins.

So, the Sunday of every Labor Day weekend Indian Lake has the Ring of Fire. All the residents stake road flares into the ground by the shore (making what looks like a ring of fire). Many people also let off paper lanterns...Here are the grandparents trying to get one lit. |
In Class Today
Science:
We are learning about 5 different process skills that all scientists must have. They are observation, classification, measurement, inferencing, and predicting. We are currently on measurement.
Today we took a few notes on measurement. We then ran an experiment in which we attempted to answer this question:
Is their a relationship between height and wingspan?
We decided on a procedure and then we started measuring in groups. We will discuss our results more tomorrow.
Writing:
We discussed what a topic sentence is. We then identified topic sentences in different paragraphs. Finally, we took our prewriting from our own student -created lists, and created our own topic sentence. Tomorrow, we will delve into topic sentences.
We also worked on Wordstudy Packets (even though many are done). There will be a Wordstudy Test on this list on Friday, 9/7.
Math I:
We worked on p. 15 - 16 (#18 - 27) in class. We did some questions in partners, and if the partnership was correct they earned a basketball shot for candy. Many earned the chance to shoot the shot, but only one sank-- Jake.
Good job, Jake.
Math II:
We went over last week's quiz (which is now in Infinite Campus). We did great!! Our class average was a 93.9% .
There are still a few students who need to finish p. 15/16 (#18 - 27). At this point you are on your own with this assignment. No more reminders. Whenever you get it done, get it to me.
We attempted a bit of a Math Lab. I asked this question:
How many different rectangles can you make out of 12 squares?
Students were give square tiles and had to work together to find the answer. Unfortunately, we did quite poorly collaborating. So, I stopped the lesson, discussed expectations for collaboration, and told them we'll try it again tomorrow. I'm not angry. I'm not upset. Just adament. :)

From Math...Students are trying to find ways to form DIFFERENT rectangles using exactly 12 squares....
