Out Sick

I was out with a stomach bug yesterday (took a half-day).  Tristan was also out. He thought it was pretty cool to be at home, sick with daddy.  That is, until he realized there's not a lot to do when stuck inside.

A lot of students have been out sick lately. I imagine there is a bug going around.  Students should make sure they wash their hands consistently and try to avoid sticking your hands and fingers in your mouth or eyes.

I want to thank Mrs. Schall for subbing for me yesterday. You did a wonderful job and I'm happy the kids behaved well for you.

Walking Sushi

As I've mentioned before, the sense of humor of this generation of kids seems to revolve around random things. Whether watching The Regular Show on the Cartoon Network, or watching a Julian Smith video on Youtube, you can sense the unsystematic undertones.

Personally, I think kids these days are so connected that they see the systematic structure of the people controlling and mapping out their lives so clearly that they value uniqueness so greatly that it entertains them.

Everything seems to be delivered to them in lock-step routine.  A constant and deliberate, patterning of their lives.

I can see how the freedom of things untethered to collective expectations is thrilling.

Which is why I found this funny....Kennedy has been placing a wind-up walking sushi on my desk after class a few times a week for the last 2 weeks.  Yesterday, was the 1st day that the wind-up toy came with a note..

"You have a big collection of walking sushi now don't you?"

Does it get any more random than that?

My job is weird. Fun...but weird.  :)

In Class Today....

Science:

I still had a few straggler Fed Ex Day presentations that I needed to be done.  We also finished our flashcards, took notes on the Rock Cycle, discussed what we already know about rocks and the rock cycle, watched an 8-minute video on the Rock cycle and did a Vocab Squares (an interactive game I do in class) tutorial.

Writing:

We worked on our rough drafts (due Tuesday, 10/2).  We also played a game of concentration (Quia game) as a class in groups.

Math I:

Students worked in whole group to solve this question

Jake invites his team over to his house for a party.  He served 20 cookies and 40 mountain dews to his guests.  Each teammate had the same amount of cookies and dews.  Nothing was left over.  How many teammates could have attended his party?

We then broke groups down into partners and solved this question:

Riley is taking this class hiking. He knows that we’ll need our energy, so he decides to make snack packs. Riley figures the best hiking food for energy is apples and trail mix.
Riley goes out and buys 24 apples and 36 small bags of trail mix.

Riley is a fair dude, so he wants to make sure everyone gets the same amount.

What is the greatest amount of snack packs he can make where everyone gets the same amount?

Then I added a twist
Sam and Alex break into Riley’s stash and eat 6 trail mixes!!!

Now what is the greatest number of snack packs Riley can make, where everyone gets the same amount.
I then assigned this question:

They started working on this individually in Math and BCO
today. They have until the end of BCO tomorrow to finish
it.

Math II:

We finished our quizzes and then worked on challenging
problems (red and blue cards) and a new resiliency
question. This one is quite easy, I'm going to go over it
tomorrow, so if you want points make sure to get this
done.

100-point Question:

Look for a VERY small dalmation.  He's smaller than your
thumbnail.  Once you find him you'll find the cards.
