Math Resiliency Question #7
In Class Today....
Science:
We have a big test coming up on Thursday. Normally with Science, I like to hold 2 review sessions before the test. The first one is the Survivor game, and I usually follow that up with a Jeopardy type of game the 2nd day.
Today we did survivor.
This game involves, knowledge of the subject, collaboration, and your ability to negotiate and outwit your peers. It's 2 parts review, 1-part social experiment.
Just like the game Survivor, you want to be the last one voted off the island.
Each group gets 3 stick figures that represent members of a Survivor tribe.
The immunity idol:
Is then placed with a group but rather than being granted immunity that group is granted the power to vote off a member (stick figure).
First, they must get the right answer (which they write down on a whiteboard). If the question is correct teams may send 2 representatives to negotiate. After 1-minute, teams get back together and decide who to erase (vote off) off the board.
Students, in the role of game player, have to navigate social circles. They have to convince people to not vote against them, while at the same time not look intimidating or coming across too timid.
I attached the powerpoint to my Listing Folder (tabbed at the top of this blog), for those who want to review.
I also attached the Science Review to the Listing Folder in case anyone left it at school.
Don't forget to check out the Rags to Riches game above either.

Writing:
We got to the computer lab today to work on typing out our edited rough drafts into final copies. We also played some Quia games (thanks for leading the class Lilly).
Math I:
We worked on prime factoring numbers. We did this by creating prime factor trees, circling the prime numbers, and then combining them and putting in exponential notation.
Math II:
Well, we solved the locker problem.
Word around town (or..umm...actually...just us math teachers) was that it may take a few days to solve it.
Not so.
Students looked at their 100-locker samples and saw that these lockers were open:
2, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100
It didn't take long for them to see the pattern....Unfortunately, I can't tell you. I want Andrew P. to look at it and see if he can figure it out.
We had BCO work (Problem 5.1 C, D, and E)....Andrew (and anyone else who was absent, but I think Andrew was the only one) if you can find the pattern and then just use that to finish the problem, I'll count that as your assignment. the orginial question was: Of the 1,000 lockers, how many would be open?
100-point Clue:
Amazingly, this picture:

Was drawn on something we have in our classroom. Find it, and you'll find the cards.
